He headed up the hill 30 yards away to the NW. At 7:45 am, I had a small doe sneak in behind me at 20 yards moving from east to west. At 8:00 am, the neighbor came by to thank me. I went to Double D and Steve went up to the fort on the north field. It is the coldest morning of the season by far. I even wore my heavy boots. I tried to grunt him up the hill, but he just kept going. Too small to shoot anyways. I had to get back inside so Lon and Sue could go to the Badger game and I needed to get back to Cannon for her dance recital. I got down at 10:30 am. Totals: 6 deer, 4 does and 2 bucks.

Friday, November 11, 2016 pm. Sunset: 4:42 pm. Hunting closes: 5:12 pm. Temperature: 51 degrees. Mostly sunny. Wind: N-NE 5-10 mph. I have been waiting for this wind, and I finally got it. Mom and Charley gave me a ride down the road so I wouldn't spook any deer. I was all ready to go by 2:15 pm. I laid down a scent trail through the field and I put the buck and the doe decoy out front to the north of me in the field. At least I should see some deer tonight. Hopefully a big boy steps out, as I am running out of time. At 4:15 pm, I looked to the south and there were several does getting pushed/chased around by a nice shooter buck. I grunted and bleated hoping they would come up to investigate. At 4:45 pm, a two does came out in the field from the east 150 yards away. At 4:50 pm, a small 4-6 pointer came out into the field from the SE and scared the does away. Does and the same buck kept coming into the field down in the SE corner of the field. I am hoping that a good buck will come cruising through during daylight hours scent checking for a doe in heat. We will see. I only heard 3 gun shots tonight. They were all after 5:00 pm. Totals: Bob - 0 deer.

Almost slept through my alarm this morning with the time change. I set my alarm for 4:40 pm instead of am. I woke up on my own at 4:55 am. Thank God. This morning I decided to go to the QDM stand out between 2nd and 3rd point. I was all set by 6:00 am. I decided to set up the buck and die decoy about 15 yards to the south of me. We will see. At 6:55 am, I had a different really dark rack 8-10 point nice 2 1/2-3 1/2 old buck come through. He came up the hill from the west, directly in front of me. He got to 40 yards and saw the decoys. He was not impressed and trotted off to the SW. At 10:45 am, I heard some leaves rustling behind me to the east. I looked back and it was 5 Tom's all together. Cool to see, but not exactly what I am looking for. At 11:00 am, I had a small mutant spike come up the hill from west to east about 40 yards to the north of me. That was it. Wind: S-SE 2-4 mph. Back at it again this morning. I decided to give Double D another shot. I told myself that I will sit until 12:00 pm. If I don't get any action  by then, I will head in, recharge the battery, watch some of the Badger game, and head over for the evening sit at Twin Towers or Blue Square. At 8:40 am, I saw my first 1 1/2 year old buck. He was 75 yards away going across and up the hill to the NW. I think he was a small 6 pointer. Fun to get some action. At 10:10 am, I heard something coming through behind me. I turned it it was a nice 8-10 pointer coming up the hill towards me. I had laid down a scent trail on my way in, and I thought he was going to follow it right in. When he got to 30 yards, he turned south and headed across the hill. Too small, but no shot anyways. At 11:50 am, I heard a branch break behind me. I looked down the hill and there was a small 4 pointer moving from north to south about 80 yards down the hill from me. At 1:30 pm, I heard something walking towards me from the south. He walked by heading towards the NE down the hill from me. The closest he got to me was 40 yards away. This morning, I decided to go to the QDM stand between 2nd and 3rd point. I was ready to roll at 6:55 am. I sat there until 11:30 am. I just could not take not seeing any deer anymore. I was packing up, a I looked up and there was a doe sneaking through from north to south the to west of me 35 yards away. I let her leave as I was already committed to moving. After I got down, I spooked another doe that was bedded behind me. I grabbed all my gear and walked over to the north point stand out on 2nd point. At 12:45 pm, I just caught a glimpse of a pretty good buck. He could have been a shooter. 70 yards away in the brush. Moving from north to south to the west of me. I grunted and bleated, but he just kept on moving. At least I am seeing some deer. At 1:05 pm, I heard a buck chasing a doe below me coming from south to north. They ended up circling me and heading to the east. The closest he got was 40 yards l, but he was in the brush. They were heading the direction of the stand I had just left. So close!  I forgot my safety strap at QDM and after the hunt I went back to get it. Of course, there were deer all around that stand. Go figure. Totals: 4 deer. 3 does and one 9 point buck.

Grunted to him, but couldn't get him to come down. At 3:30 pm, I had a coyote come through. He was a little too far for a shot. Damn!  That was it. Totals: Bob - 1 deer. 1 buck.

November 1, 2016 pm

Tuesday, November 1, 2016 pm. Sunset: 5:55 pm. Hunting closes: 6:25 pm. Temperature: 71 degrees. Mostly sunny. Hot. Wind: W-NW 3-5 mph. I left Cannon Falls at 12:15 pm. Made a couple of stops and headed to Romance. I just had a feeling. I was hoping to get up into the back valley, but with all the flooding this summer, I was afraid that I was going to get my car stuck. So, I decided to go to the Creek stand. I was at the base of the tree by 2:45 pm. As I was preparing to climb in, something spooked behind me and took off to the east. It sounded like a freight training crashing through the brush. The stand has not been hunted in a while, so I had to clear out some brush. If anything comes through here tonight, I will be able to hear it coming from a long ways away. At 4:15 pm, I had a big fat doe come through from the NW. She walked right down the road slowly at 10 yards. I thought seriously about popping her, but I really didn't know how I was going to get her out of there. I would have had to have gone back to Copper and grabbed the cart, and then driven back up here to get her. I didn't think it was going to be worth all of the hassle, so I decided to let her walk. At 6:05 pm, I had a beautiful 3 1/2 year old 8 pointer come down the trail from the north. He stopped about 25 yards to the north of me. I got some good video. He was tempting, but still too small. He ended up circling me and walked through the brush around me and out to the field edge. He walked along the edge of the field heading south. Totals: Bob - 2 deer. 1 buck and 1 doe.

Tuesday, November 1, 2016 am

Tuesday, November 1,  2016. Sunrise: 7:49 am. Hunting opens: 7:19 am. Temperature 57 degrees. Mostly sunny. Wind: W-SW 3-5 mph. This morning I am in Cannon Falls still. I decided to stay overnight, hunt MN in the morning and then leave for Wisconsin. I was up and out the door and settled in at the dump stand by 7:05 am. At 7:30 am, I hear a grunt up the hill to the south of me. I look and there is a guy sneaking on the ground at the top of the hill with a cross bow smoking a cigarette. What a #%*~&$ idiot. I whistle and waved and he finally saw me and left. Moron. So pissed. Sat until 10:15 am. Decided to pack it in early so I could get to Sconie. Totals: Bob-0 deer.

Sunday, October 30, 2016 pm

Sunday, October 30, 2016 pm. Sunset: 6:02 pm. Hunting closes: 6:32 pm. Temperature: 44 degrees. Mostly cloudy. Wind: E-NE 3-5 mph. We got back from Copper around 2:00. Right as we pulled in the driveway, Gary Samuelson was getting ready to cut our corn. I knew that I needed to get set up while he was cutting. The setup was perfect, I was in the stand by 2:55 pm and I was able to sneak in undetected. I decided to try a scent wick, do I lit it and placed a bucket with holes drilled into it about 10 yards to the east of me. He had everything done, picked and out of here by 4:20 pmAt 5:45 pm, I heard something behind me. It was a small nubbin buck. He stayed back about 40 yards and fed. He never came through and he went back to the west. That was it. Totals: Bob - 1 deer, 1 nubbin buck.

Sunday October 30, 2016. Sunrise: 7:37 am. Hunting opens: 7:07 am. Temperature 50 degrees. Mostly cloudy. Wind: N 5-10 mph. We got home from the game a little after midnight, so after a short nights rest, it was time to get back at it. It is getting to be prime time and you need to maximize and get every hour you can in the woods. I decided to go back to DD and was set up by 6:50 amAt 8:15 am, I had a little chill so I got undressed and put on a vest. As soon as I finished and got my coat back on, I heard something behind me. It was a nice 8 pointer (2 1/2 year old) snuck in behind me going from north to south. I grunted to him several times and he walked/trotted off to the SE. I ended up sitting until 10:20 am. I needed to get back, get packed so we can hunt Minnesota tonight. Totals: Bob 1 deer, 1 buck.

I was up and out the door by 6:40 am. I decided to give the new stand the Double D a shot. I was ready to go by 6:50 am. I parked the Ranger at the base of Cherry valley. At 7:30 am, there were some deer blowing a warning call to the NE of me. It must have been spooked by the Ranger. At 8:25 am, I heard a deer moving behind me going from south to north. It was a beautiful 2 1/2 year old 8 pointer. He came through about 30 yards down the hill from me. He slowly worked his way off to the NE. At 9:35 am, I heard something walking over the ridge to the NW of me. I took out my grunt tube, let out a short series of grunts and I brought in a beautiful 135" 3 1/2 year old 10 pointer. Huge body. He came across the hill and to within 10 yards of me broadside. He was super tempting, but I decided to pas and let him live. Fun to see. Would you have let him live?  I sat until 11:00 am. I had to get inside to get ready for the Badger game. Totals: Bob - 2 deer. 2 bucks.

I shut my computer st 3:20 pm, showered, got dressed and headed down to the Sugar Shack food plot stand.   I quietly snuck over yo the VAT, because I had stashed "Stumpy" my buck decoy. I put him out in the food plot about 10 yards to the SE of the stand. Nothing to report. Totals: Bob - 0 deer.

Sunday, October 23, 2016 am. Sunrise: 7:36 am. Hunting opens 7:06 am. Temperature: 47 degrees. Mostly sunny. Wind: SW- 5-10 mph. Keeping with the low impact strategy, I decided to give the Ridgeback stand a try. I don't want to burn out the best stands for when the rut is in full swing. I was all set up by 6.55 am. A little later then I was hoping for, but I had to get another batch of sticks in the smoker this morning. Just before I got down, I noticed that there were 5 Tom turkeys about 60 yards down the hill to the east by the Point stand. Totals: Bob - 0 deer.

Saturday, October 22, 2016 pm. Sunset: 6:14 pm. Hunting closes: 6:44 pm. Mostly dint. Temperature: 62 degrees. Wind N-NE 3-5 mph. This morning, we got together to make a 50# batch of smoked cheddar sticks made out of Don's elk from last year. Don and Mary offered to watch Charley, so I jumped at the chance to go hunt. I decided to give the VAT a try. The elm that the stand is build in died, so this might be the last year it can be used. I was all set up by 3:50 pm. At 6:20 pm, I had a nice shooter buck (I think he was a 9) come through from west to east about 60 yards away and through the brush. He walked right up past the dump stand. I wish I had been sitting there tonight. Attached is a picture of the buck that I am pretty sure that I saw tonight.
That was it. Totals: Bob - 1 deer, 1 shooter buck.

I don't want to ruin my best stands, so I decided to just hunt the ladder stand. I was in and all set up by 4:25 pm. Bring in such a hurry and excited to get out, I forgot my back pack. No butt pad and no Oxonics. Oh well. Five minutes after getting settled in, Gertie came running through paying me s visit. I texted Heidi and asked her to call Gertie in. At 5:25, I looked back to the NW and a small 1 point came through at 15 yards going east. Behind him was a nubbin buck. The mutant spike walked off to the NE, and the nubbin hung around for 20 minutes. He got so close that he was actually smelling the ladder stand I was in.  Crazy. So much for needing the Ozonics. At 5:50 pm, a group of about 15-20 turkeys came from the west behind me. They kind of circled me to the SW. At 6:05 pm, I had a medium sized doe sneak in behind me from the SW. She got to within 8 yards of me but she was downwind and she would have seen me draw. Damn. So close. At 6:25 pm, I heard something coming up the trail from the east. Two fawns came down the trail and walked right underneath me. They went off to the SW. At 6:35 pm, the nubbin came back back from the south. Saturday, September 17, 2016 am  Sunrise 6:53 am. Hunting opens 6:23 am. Temperature: 54 degrees. Mostly sunny. Wind - S-SW 5-10 mph. Opening morning has finally arrived. I decided to head up to Right Field and Dwayne went to Arlie's food plot stand. We were both in and settled by 6:00 am. At 7:05 am, Dwayne had 2 does and 2 fawns come down the hill from the west. They got to about 5 yards, but there were too many eyes to get a shot. At 8:05 am, Dwayne saw a bachelor group of 3 bucks walking together to the NE about 175 yards away. He said the lead buck was decent but the other 2 were small. At 8:30 am, Dwayne saw a small fawn up the hill to the west. At 8:50 am, I had a decent 9-10 pointer sneak in behind me. He came through st 10 yards to the north of me. He ended up heading down the hill to the NW towards Pisa. I did get a little video of him. Totals: Bob 1 deer, 1 decent buck. Dwayne- 8 deer, 3 bucks.

Not much on the cameras, but we did catch this guy.  A potential target for this fall.

September 1, 2016

Thursday, September 1, 2016.  Finally a decent buck on camera.  Nothing huge, but something to at least peak my interest.  I got another photo of just half of a main beam.  See upper left of the one picture.  It looks like it might have some potential.  A little more then two weeks to go!

Friday, December 18, 2015 - 12:00 pm.  I was working from home this day.  It was just before noon when Heidi (who was working from home as well) said that she was going to go upstairs and take a shower.  A few minutes later, she shouted down that there was a deer that was laying down behind the house about 50 yards down the hill to the NE.  I grabbed my binoculars and ran upstairs.  When I got there, I could clearly see it was a buck laying on its side.  I got dressed and walked down to see how long it had been there. When, I got closer, I could clearly see a open wound high on his back but below the spine. I walked up behind it, and I was about ready to kick it, when it lifted his head and started thrashing.  I jumped back as it scare the sh_t ou of me.  It was too fatigued to be able to stand up.  I ran back up to the house and grabbed my bow.  I ran down to him and he just looked at me.  His eyes pretty much said, "please end this."  I did with one clean arrow.  I put my bow tag on him, even though it was not how I wanted to use it.  Also, it was a deer that really needed another year to grow.  I gutted him out and dragged him back to the shack with the ATV.  After we skinned him out, I could clearly see that it was an old arrow wound.  I lost about 4-6" of his one tenderloin, other wise the meat was just fine.  Crazy day at the office.  Picture attached.
